Everyone want to own a boat. What is more joyful and will bring you greater pleasure than being able to skim the waves on a beautiful summer's day? Nothing.

The first sixr questions you have to ask yourself are:

1. "What kind of boat do I want, a power boat or a sailboat?"

2. "What am I going to use it for?"
   Is it going to be for Living, Fishing, Day Sailing, Visiting or for Racing?

3. "How big a boat do I want?"
   The larger the body of water I am going to be on, the bigger and more seaworthy a boat I will need. Also, bigger boats are more comfortable and enjoyable. They have more features like cabins, galleys (kitchens), heads, showers, etc. You can sleep and even live on them.

4. "How much boat can I afford?"
   Do NOT fool yourself and don't believe all you see on Boat Sites or read in boating magazines. Boats are expensive to run and maintain. For example, there is the matter of dock space, and winter storage and fuel and repairs (How much do you know about repairing a marine engine?).

   Then there are the accessories, everything from dock lines and bumpers, to trailers, anchors, to fishing equipment, to GPS systems and don't forget to get insurance.

5. Boat Costs
   J. P. Morgan, the financier once said, "If you have to ask how much it costs (to run each year) don't buy it." A safe measure is to double everything you are told and make sure the boat will fit your budget.

6. "Should I buy a used or new boat?"
   Boats are like cars - except more so. Granted, you are going to have big value depreciation in the first two years. However, particularly if you are a first time boat owner, a new boat from a reputable manufacturer comes with a warranty guarantee and you may need it. Boat repairs, particularly marine engine repairs can be very expensive.
